âWhy would they take the boy?â Champlain asked Dambretti after reading the short note from Cambrique.
âThey took him before,â Lucio told him darkly. âItâs the same old story. They want what we have. This is exactly what the Master feared would happen. It simply surprises me that it has occurred twice. Now, they want your Key among other things. I would be inclined to guess that this is an inside job, Brother. Who else but a Templar would know about your Key? About the boy? About the Villa and where things are? Who lives where? Tell me, who would know? And the Master was right when he said that children such as John Paul were a grave danger to the Order. To openly proclaim a child is no less than an invitation to such people as know of us and have personal agendas. Those who would stand against us would know that a child could be used as leverage where nothing else would suffice. It is similar to the elder days when the sons of Lords and Kings and their daughters, as well, were fair political game, played like pieces in a living game of chess.â
âI cannot exchange the Key for the boy,â Champlain objected and shook his head. âNo matter whose son he is. I can well imagine how Brother Ramsay might feel or Sister Meredith, but there must be some other option. I would lay down my own life for John Paul, but I cannot give up the Key!â
âIt will not come to that, Brother. No one will give up anything for him and we will get him back. These men are fools if they think they can get away with it,â Lucio slammed his hand against the television and it came on, blasting out some raucous game show.
âDe Bleu, do something with this,â Lucio turned on the younger Knight as if it were his fault. Armand grabbed the remote and shut the thing off.
âIf they know us,â he continued âthen they should also know what happened to the last two imbeciles who tried such a thing. Even our own Brothers are not exempt from the hangmanâs noose.â
âDo you think they will really bring him to America?â de Bleu asked as he sat down on the foot of the bed. âPerhaps we can rescue him here. Are we expecting them to come to this meeting? They seem to know a great deal about us and our movements. It makes me wonder how such knowledge could be leaking out. It must be an inside job. But who? We will need to bolster our security measures at the Villa. There are some very interesting developments in electronic surveillance that I would like to see installed on the grounds. Perhaps this will convince the Master that such things are necessary. We can no longer rely on anonymity.â
âThat is true. We may, indeed, have traitors amongst our ranks. It has happened before. Our people in the fields have not had enough exposure to the members of the Council of Twelve and the old ways to sufficiently to keep them in line.
